With the efforts of NIC Costa Rica and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications, an agreement was reached to install the first Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Costa Rica. It will be located in NIC Costa Rica, as it is a neutral point and will allow internet communications between Costa Ricans and websites inside the country do not have to go through other territories before reaching end users, especially when connected to different operators, which causes a delay in communication and saturates international links.

It is estimated that savings in the international network traffic could exceed 35% with the consequent improvement on the speed of service. After this, the various ISPs would be signing agreements to work together, so that in a short term national internet traffic is going through the IXP.
