On 6 May LACTLD and LACNIC organized a joint opening session in two panel sessions: “The Internet Governance agenda for the next 5 years” and “ICANN’s Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean”. LACTLD’s 5th Policy Workshop was sponsored by the local host .CO, the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee and nic.br as well as SEDO and ICANN.
On 25th April, the Girls in ICT Day was celebrated . It is an initiative that attempts to bring Information and Communication Technologies closer to this gender to bridge the current gap of women and girls in ICT. The initiative was established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in the 70th Resolution (Guadalajara, 2010).

Despite the advantages this field can offer, lots of girls do not consider a career based on ICT, among other issues, due to the lack of information amongst students, professors and parents about the benefits of a career in this field. In this line, through the 70th resolution, the fourth Thursday of April, (this year Thursday 25th April) , is established this international celebration to get to approach the girls to the telecommunication world. Basically, countries are encouraged to develop activities (in 2012 90 countries adhered) consisting in approaching young girls and university students to the offices of ICT companies, research and education centers, public entities, and every institution that is somehow related to the ICT fields in which young girls are available to see for themselves how a career in this field may contribute with their personal growth, as a space to make questions and to get to know women that may be a role model. Informative lectures were also organized by women that have developed significant roles in this field.

It is interesting initiative to take into consideration for next year. Meanwhile, we raise the question: How can we cooperate with such an important initiative?

In 2009, it appeared with more than one million IPs, which corresponds to 17% of the list. Today it ranks in the 12th position, with less than 200,000 which represents 2% .

This information was obtained by the Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), when it presented the first assessment of Port 25 program management which was launched in 2005. The program includes a series of agreements aimed to reduce Spam in domestic networks and it ended in 2012 with the actions of telecommunications providers who performed network management to obstruct the main outflow of computer spam. More information

The workshop was attended by 29 Registries of which 13 were LACTLD members and 8 from the LAC region. There were 49 participants in total.

The panel of new gTLDs with an urban and territorial focus was a strong highlight of the event. The session was chaired and moderated by Eduardo Santoyo , LACTLD/.co and had the presentations from Nacho Amadoz ( puntCAT – .barcelona and .catalonia), Jonathan Cosbie Ross (Nominet – .cymru and .wales) and Oscar Robles (nic.mx and .lat).

.cl, .pa, .mx and .co shared their experiences concerning marketing campaigns, branding positioning and marketing with registrars. (http://www.lactld.org/wp-content/files_mf/marketingworkshop_agenda.pdf)

We are very thankful towards those who participated with their presence and their contributions and we hope there will be a rebound for those who were not able to attend. LACTLD also extends its thanks and appreciation to CENTR and its members and particularly to the local host, puntCAT for its hospitality and its teamwork.
